In a rather Zunesque move, Apple may be planning its own version of "the social" for the iPod and iPhone. An Apple patent, recently made public, details a system where WiFi-enabled devices such as cellphones and MP3 players can find each other automatically, perform device-to-device transfers, access iTunes to purchase new and shared music, and also share contact info.
The interaction that Apple has planned offers users far more choices than what the Zune allows for, as it looks like authorized iDevices will constantly trade between libraries if the user sets it up that way, creating a random shuffle of similar music you didn't have previously. And, of course, it enables you to toss down some coin if you like what you hear. It's a fantastic way to get people discovering and purchasing new music, not to mention keeping large capacity iPods marketable, as they have more room to pull in foreign tunes. [Electronista]

This is kind of brilliant. This Microsoft patent allows for a user to receive a squirted song by Zune-to-Zune WiFi transfer, eventually paying for it when the 3-plays or 3-days are up. Even cooler, the squirter would get a commission from the squirtee's purchase. A smart move if they could get it working in the wild. [Zune Scene via Nate]

Greetings irrational fanboys and Apple haters! Ten days and 12,000 words later, our stone-cold look at what it means to own an iPhone is done. Before we get to the in depth hands-on, here's the verdict I'd give any good friend: Wait to buy the iPhone.
Wait for What?
Wait until Apple updates the software on this iPhone. That was a hard sentence to write, since I'm thumbing through my own iPhone like a teenager with his first Playboy. This is what the phone of the future will look like, and Steve Jobs and Apple should be proud. iPhone of 2010 aside, this model must be judged on what it is today. Like every other journalist will tell you, its multitouch UI, browser and iPod are all pants-worthy. But as the honeymoon sets, I find myself left with a phone that could be a lot more functional. I could make comparisons to high-end Nokia or Helio phones that have endless lists of wonderful features like GPS, YouTube video uploading and more. But only a douchebag would tackle the ...

Critics have bashed Apple for omitting Adobe Flash support from the iPhone's "real life" Safari browser, and with good reason: A quick spin around the web on an iPhone reveals sites that don't work, or don't work well without the plug-in. Now, it's rumored to be coming. The question is, was the original exclusion of Flash a technical decision or a business decision?
You'll recall Apple's celebrated announcement of YouTube support. However, the fine print suggested you couldn't get all YouTube video, but only those that had been rolled over to the Apple-favored H.264 video codec.
Although this was arguably a technical hurdle, Archos had just announced and demonstrated a Wi-Fi media player that could easily browse YouTube, and queue up any video on the site, using an Opera browser with Flash plug-in. Did the Archos 605 have that much more processing muscle? Teardowns of the iPhone have revealed a sufficiently sturdy ARM processor, so we think it's doubtful.
The s...

Super nerd Chris Pirillo—you know, the guy that read his wedding vows off a UMPC—just made this video with his wife (?) showing off what would happen if an iPod had sex with a Zune. It's four minutes long, but there's only about 30 seconds to a minute of fat in it, which is quite an achievement for a one-premise joke.

Anyone could get ten seconds of jokes out of making an iPod have sex with a Microsoft Zune. Gadgeteer-entertainers Chris and Ponzi Pirillo get four solid minutes out of it, and it actually stays funny. "Can I squirt something?" "What?" "That's just what I do." "Don't make it weird."

We're super super skeptical on this one, but according to ZuneScene, Microsoft recently bought the Zunesleeves.com domain, which currently features a Zune logo with a link to the official Zune site. Embedded in the site's html is the rather odd tag "i have zune sleeves", which suggests that -- if real -- it might be something more than just a Zune version of the iPod socks. Still, it's difficult to imagine Microsoft coming out with anything significant that has a sleeve association, and seeing as the site was registered by proxy at Dreamhost and is still set to the default name servers -- Zune.net was registered at Register.com, and has Microsoft name servers -- we're guessing that this site is the work of a sleeve-obsessed prankster.
