Similar to the way Zunes were discounted, Amazon is offering up $20 discounts on the 30GB iPod and $28 discounts on the 80GB iPod. We doubt it's related to the new iPods that may be coming, but it's a good deal if you've been waiting for some reason to jump into the iPod pool. [Amazon via Engadget]

Here are more edited excerpts from the interview I had last week with Sarah Friar, Goldman Sachs' new software analyst covering Microsoft. She's the subject of today's column.
Q: What do you think about Steve Ballmer's ill-fated February presentation to investors, when he told them to tone down Vista expectations. Was he trying to be open and fumbled it?
A: That one still perturbs me as to what exactly he was trying to do. He was definitely trying to temper expectations somewhat and he did that. I don't think he was trying to be as obtuse as he came across.

In reality he probably did just fumble a little bit. But this message about "some Street models are too high" -- still, no one has managed to work out what he meant by that.
You have a big personality there. Steve will do what he wants to do and the investor relations department can kind of script him and say here's how you should talk about it. But he's always going to get out there and say what he w...

If anyone gave that Zune tattoo guy props for his bravery / stupidity, you owe a handful of kudos to this fellow, too. In an admittedly bizarre move to show one's disdain (right?) for the always infuriating Blue Screen of Death, this man has went so far as to tattoo the BSOD error message on his arm, presumably as a battle scar for all those Windows driver installations gone terribly awry. Next up? We're betting on a Kernel Panic tat for arm number two.

Is the Zune 2.0 getting delayed due to production problems? Is it possible for a product that hasn't even been announced yet to be "delayed"? If a tree falls in the forest and no one is around to hear it, does it make a sound? [Zune Scene]

While Microsoft has yet to officially announce anything about its next-generation Zunes, we've had no shortage of rumors informing us of the company's supposed plans. Last we heard, Microsoft so-called "Scorpio" and "Draco" Zunes were headed for production in July, with something set to be released before the end of the year. Now, if this latest rumor is to be believed, Microsoft seems to have hit a snag. According to Zune Scene, while the flash-based Draco is reportedly still on track, the hard drive-based Scorpio has been delayed, supposedly due to "continuity problems between the flex cable and pcb." As a result, Zune Scene says the production run will now not be complete until "well into September." As with all of these rumors, however, we wouldn't pin too much hope/disappointment on them pending some further confirmation.

We're not sure what's worse; the Zune guy getting three Zune tattoos, or this painful-as-hell Microsoft blue screen of death (BSOD) tattoo up this guy's entire right arm. We're guessing this guy is a Windows fan, because nobody hates Windows THAT MUCH to endure hours of pain just for the constant reminder that Windows occasionally crashes when you install the wrong driver.
